The "Exasperating Predecessor": Pocock on Gibbon and Voltaire.
This article offers a critical discussion of Pocock's analysis of the relationship between Gibbon and Voltaire, and particularly the extent to which Decline and Fall was inspired by Voltaire's Essai sur les moeurs. It shows that "Momigliano's hypothesis" about the divorce of philosophy and erudition and their reconciliation in Gibbon was initially a commentary by Momigliano on Voltaire's histor...
متن کاملOn Newton-Cartan cosmology
After a brief summary of the Newton-Cartan theory in a form which emphasizes its close analogy to general relativity, we illustrate the theory with selective applications in cosmology. The geometrical formulation of this nonrelativistic theory of gravity, pioneered by Cartan and further developed by various workers, leads to a conceptually sound basis of Newtonian cosmology. In our discussion o...
متن کاملVOLTaiRE: A Fault Tolerant VLIW Design With On-line Property Checking for Reconfigurable Datapaths
Verification and reliability are emerging as bottlenecks in processor design as aggressive technology scaling and continued architectural innovations enable to perform high speed complex operations. In this context we present VOLTaiRE, a ”VLIW processor with OnLine Testing and REconfigurability” that guarantees reliable functionality of the execution units even in the presence of manufacturing,...
متن کاملOn multivariate Newton-like inequalities
We study multivariate entire functions and polynomials with non-negative coefficients. A class of Strongly Log-Concave entire functions, generalizingMinkowski volume polynomials, is introduced: an entire function f in m variables is called Strongly Log-Concave if the function (∂x1) c1 ...(∂xm) mf is either zero or log((∂x1) c1 ...(∂xm) mf) is concave on R + . We start with yet another point of ...
متن کاملA note on the Newton radius
The Newton radius of a code is the largest weight of a uniquely correctable error. We establish a lower bound for the Newton radius in terms of the rate. In particular we show that in any family of linear codes of rate below one half, the Newton radius increases linearly with the codeword length.
